What should you know about RET fusion lung cancer?

RET is a gene involved in cell signalling. A fusion joins RET with another gene and can send growth signals in the tumour. It is a feature of the cancer cells, not a symptom and not a conclusion that a hoarse voice or cough is cancer.

Genomic tumour profiling can look for RET and other changes using tumour tissue or, in some situations, a blood sample. The result is interpreted alongside the cancer type, scans, overall health, and whether disease is confined to the lung or has reached another site.

Ask the oncology team which test identified the fusion and whether the sample was adequate. If the cancer can be removed, lung surgery may be discussed. For cancer that needs medicine, a targeted treatment may be considered; chemotherapy or radiotherapy can have different roles depending on stage and symptoms.

Keep a copy of the molecular report and scan summaries. Ask whether the plan includes checking the brain or other areas, how response will be assessed, and what options remain if the cancer changes during treatment. Palliative care can support symptoms at any stage alongside cancer-directed treatment.

Contact your team quickly for new or worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, a sudden change in voice, or difficulty swallowing. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, collapse, new weakness, seizure, or sudden confusion. These symptoms need assessment and do not prove that the cancer has spread.

Ask what the RET result means for your stage, whether the tumour was tested for other actionable changes, and which treatment is recommended first. Ask about scan timing, side effects, brain monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, and support for breathlessness or pain.
