What should you know about restoring hair with a transplant?

During a transplant, a clinician removes follicular units from a donor area, often at the back or sides of the scalp, and places them into recipient sites. Techniques differ in how grafts are collected and how the hairline is designed. The procedure does not create new follicles, so the available donor hair and the pattern of loss affect the plan.

Hair loss may relate to male or female pattern hair loss, traction alopecia, inflammation or another cause. A consultation should examine the scalp and review the pace of shedding before surgery. Treating an active scalp disorder or discussing non-surgical options may be appropriate first.

Share your medical conditions, medicines, allergies and previous scalp procedures. Ask for a proposed hairline and an explanation of graft placement. Afterward, follow instructions for washing, sleeping, exercise and sun protection. Crusting, tightness and temporary shedding can occur; do not pick scabs or apply products unless your clinic advises it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, heavy bleeding or swelling that affects the eyes or breathing. Arrange review if the scalp becomes increasingly tender or if healing appears delayed. Sudden patchy loss elsewhere, scaling or inflammation also deserves assessment because a transplant will not address every cause of hair loss.
