What should you know about repeated tonsillitis?

Episodes may involve a Sore Throat, Fever, swollen tonsils, difficulty swallowing, or Swollen Glands in the neck. Viruses are common causes, while Strep Throat is a bacterial possibility that may need testing. A record of symptoms, test results, treatment, and recovery helps a clinician look for a pattern.

Tonsils are areas of immune tissue at the back of the throat. During tonsillitis they can become enlarged, red, and coated, and swallowing may hurt. An Earache can accompany a throat infection because nearby areas share connected nerves, but it can also need separate assessment.

Recurring symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves. A clinician may examine your throat and neck, review exposure to unwell people, and decide whether a swab or other test is appropriate. Symptoms that never fully settle between episodes may point to a different problem from separate infections.

Rest, drink enough fluid to keep urine pale, and choose cool or warm drinks and soft foods according to what feels comfortable. Avoid smoke and shareable items such as cups or cutlery while you are unwell. Follow the label for any suitable pain or fever medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a long-term condition.

Seek prompt advice for dehydration, persistent high fever, worsening symptoms after initial improvement, or severe pain extending to the ear. Children who are unusually sleepy, unable to drink, or breathing noisily need urgent review.

Ask whether testing is needed during an episode, whether the pattern fits viral or bacterial infection, and what symptoms should trigger same-day care. Discuss how to record episodes and whether an ear, nose and throat referral is appropriate. Bring the dates of episodes, medicines used, test results, and any missed work or school.
