What should you know about removing a carbuncle?

A carbuncle needs clinical assessment because connected boils may require drainage, antibiotics, or both to control the infection safely. Trying to squeeze or pierce it can push infection deeper and spread bacteria to nearby skin.

A carbuncle is a group of boils joined under the skin, usually caused by infection around hair follicles. It can form a painful, swollen area with several drainage points, warmth, redness, pus, and sometimes fever or fatigue. Carbuncles are often larger and deeper than a single boil, so the clinician will examine its extent and check for factors that may affect healing.

A clinician may recommend an abscess drainage procedure to release trapped pus, usually with local anaesthetic, followed by dressing and wound-care instructions. Antibiotic therapy may be added when infection extends into surrounding skin, symptoms are severe, or particular health factors increase concern. Until assessed, use a clean warm compress, cover any drainage, wash hands after touching the area, and avoid sharing towels or razors.

Seek prompt medical care for a rapidly enlarging or very painful lump, spreading redness, red streaks, fever, chills, marked weakness, or drainage near the eye, nose, or spine. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or medicines that suppress immunity should seek advice early. Emergency help is needed for confusion, faintness, or difficulty breathing.
