What should you know about removing sunburn from the face?

Sunburn is an ultraviolet injury that can make facial skin hot, tender and red. As the surface repairs, it may feel tight, peel or form blisters. The face is easily irritated by scrubs, fragrances and strong active products, so trying to strip away the redness or peeling can delay recovery and increase discomfort.

Move out of direct sun, use cool damp compresses and apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy product while the skin is comfortable with it. Drink fluids, leave peeling skin intact and do not puncture blisters. Pause exfoliants, retinoids, fragranced products and heat until the barrier feels settled. Protect the area from further exposure with shade and suitable sun protection.

Seek medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, eye pain or vision changes. Arrange review if the burn is not settling or if the skin becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen or produces discharge. Do not apply a Topical Corticosteroids product to the face unless a clinician has advised it.
