How to remove cafe-au-lait spots

A cafe-au-lait spot is usually a flat patch with a tan to brown colour. It may be present from childhood or become noticed later. Its size, border, shade, location, and whether new spots are appearing help a clinician decide whether it has the expected pattern. It is not the same as a raised mole, a bruise, or an active rash.

A dermatologist can examine the spot and review changes in its appearance. Picosecond laser treatment may be discussed for selected pigmented marks because it delivers very short pulses of energy to pigment. The skin may be temporarily red, swollen, darker, or lighter afterward. Sun protection and careful aftercare help reduce irritation and unwanted colour change. Treatment response varies, and more than one visit may be considered.

Arrange a skin assessment if a spot changes quickly, develops several colours, becomes raised, crusts, bleeds, hurts, or differs from your other marks. New clusters of café-au-lait spots or other unusual skin findings also merit a clinician’s review rather than self-treatment.
