Removal of Seborrheic Keratosis on the Face

Seborrheic keratoses are common, non-cancerous growths that can look waxy, rough, raised, or stuck onto the skin. On the face, colour and texture can overlap with other lesions, so a clinician may examine it closely before removal. Removal may be considered when the growth catches on clothing or jewellery, becomes irritated, or is bothersome cosmetically. Removing it does not prevent other seborrheic keratoses from appearing elsewhere.

Depending on the lesion’s size, thickness, colour, and position, a clinician may freeze it with cryotherapy, gently scrape it away with curettage and cautery, or use electrosurgery. The treated area can form a crust while it heals; do not pick it, and follow the wound-care instructions given. Facial skin may temporarily look lighter, darker, pink, or mildly swollen after treatment. Sun protection helps reduce contrast while the area settles.

Arrange a skin assessment before cosmetic removal if a growth is new, rapidly changing, bleeding without clear injury, persistently painful, ulcerated, or difficult to distinguish from a mole or skin cancer. Seek review if redness spreads, swelling worsens, drainage develops, or healing does not progress as expected after treatment.
