Remedy for stiff fingers

Short answer
For stiff fingers, use gentle heat and movement, avoid forcing a painful joint, and arrange assessment when stiffness persists, locks, or limits hand function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Start gently
- Warm the hand and move fingers through a comfortable range
- Avoid
- Forceful gripping and pushing a locked finger straight
Why fingers may feel stiff
Stiffness can come from joint wear, inflammation, swelling after injury, or a tendon that catches as the finger bends. Hand Osteoarthritis often causes aching and reduced movement around finger joints. Rheumatoid Arthritis may bring swelling and stiffness in several joints, while Trigger Finger can cause catching or locking during movement. A thickened band in the palm can gradually pull a finger toward the hand, as in Dupuytren's Contracture.
Gentle ways to improve movement
Warm the hand with comfortable water, then slowly open and close the fingers within an easy range. Spread the fingers gently and practise light thumb-to-fingertip contact without gripping hard. Take breaks from prolonged typing, tools, or forceful squeezing, and keep the hand supported during activities that trigger symptoms. Do not force a locked or swollen finger straight. A hand therapist can tailor exercises and a splint when needed.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt care for sudden stiffness after an injury, obvious deformity, marked swelling, numbness, or inability to move a finger. Same-day review is appropriate for a hot red finger, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. Book an assessment when morning stiffness lasts repeatedly, several joints are affected, or a finger catches, locks, or gradually bends toward the palm.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the stiffness is joint- or tendon-related, whether imaging or blood tests are useful, which exercises fit your findings, and whether a splint could help.

Questions people ask
Is heat useful for stiff fingers?
Comfortable warmth can make gentle movement easier, but stop if heat increases swelling or throbbing.
What does a catching finger suggest?
Catching or locking may involve the flexor tendon, as seen with Trigger Finger, and merits assessment if it persists.
