Remedy for sore throat and runny nose

A Common Cold commonly presents with a runny nose and throat irritation. Allergic Rhinitis can produce watery discharge, sneezing and an itchy throat without feeling generally ill. COVID-19 or Influenza may add fever, aches, tiredness or a new cough. Strep Throat, Tonsillitis or Glandular Fever can cause stronger throat symptoms and may need examination. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat, although it does not explain every runny nose.

Drink regularly, choose soft foods, and try warm fluids or lozenges if they are safe for you. Saline spray or rinse can clear nasal mucus. Avoid smoke and share less close contact when an infection is possible; wash hands and improve room ventilation. A pharmacist can advise about pain relief or an antihistamine after checking your age, health conditions and other medicines.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, severe dehydration, confusion, chest pain or rapidly worsening swelling. Arrange a review for persistent high fever, severe one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, marked neck swelling, or symptoms that worsen after seeming to improve. Follow local testing advice if COVID-19 or another infection is suspected.
