What should you know about remedy for ringworm?

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection, not a worm. Treatment usually involves an antifungal applied to the skin; infection affecting the scalp, nails or extensive areas may need medicine taken by mouth. Use treatment for the full advised course, even if the edge of the rash fades sooner.

A ring-shaped, itchy, scaly rash can fit ringworm, but several skin problems look similar. See Skin Rash and Scaly Skin for symptom context. Fungi can pass through close skin contact and shared towels, clothing, sports equipment or bedding. Scratching can move infection to nearby skin.

A pharmacist or clinician can help select a suitable product and explain how to apply it to clean, dry skin. Topical Antifungal Treatment is commonly used for limited skin infection. Wash hands after applying it, avoid sharing personal items, launder clothing and towels, and keep the area dry. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash because it can alter its appearance.

Arrange medical review if the rash involves the scalp or nails, spreads despite correct treatment, becomes painful or oozes, or keeps returning.
