Remedies for whooping cough

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is an infection of the airways. It can begin like an ordinary Cough and later cause repeated bursts of coughing, vomiting after coughing or a breath-catching sound. Fever may be mild or absent, and adults do not always make a classic whoop.

The illness can be especially serious for babies, older adults and people with breathing conditions. Early assessment helps a clinician decide about testing, treatment and protection of close contacts.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose small meals if coughing makes eating difficult. Avoid smoke and keep away from people at higher risk while you are unwell. Cover coughs, wash hands and follow local advice about staying home.

A clinician may prescribe Antibiotic Treatment, particularly early in the illness or when reducing transmission matters. Take it exactly as directed and do not use someone else’s medicine. Childhood Immunisation lowers the risk of whooping cough and should be discussed for eligible children and families.

Get emergency help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt medical advice for repeated vomiting, worsening coughing fits, chest pain, or contact with a young baby.
