Remedies for shortness of breath linked with anxiety

Short answer
Anxiety-related breathlessness may settle with calm paced breathing, but new or severe symptoms still need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful action
- Sit supported and lengthen the exhalation gently.
- Safety point
- Do not assume a first or unusual episode is anxiety.
How anxiety can affect breathing
Anxiety may trigger rapid, shallow breathing and a strong awareness of normal chest sensations. Tingling, trembling, dizziness or a racing heart can accompany it. Similar symptoms can occur with asthma, anaemia, an abnormal rhythm, angina or an allergic reaction, so a clinician should consider the pattern, triggers and physical findings before settling on anxiety as the explanation.
A grounding approach
Pause and sit in a supported position. Breathe gently in through the nose and allow a slower, longer exhalation; stop if this makes you dizzy. Relax the shoulders, name a few things you can see and move away from smoke or other irritants. If episodes recur, arrange a review to discuss anxiety support, breathing habits and possible physical checks. Do not use a paper bag.
When it is not safe to assume anxiety
Get emergency help for severe or sudden breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, chest pressure, facial or throat swelling, or inability to speak normally. Seek prompt assessment for a first episode, symptoms during exertion, fainting, persistent palpitations, fever or wheezing. A change from your usual anxiety pattern also deserves medical attention.
What to ask
Ask how physical causes can be checked, whether an inhaler or other treatment is appropriate, which breathing exercise suits you, and where to get support for recurring anxiety.

Questions people ask
Can slow breathing stop the sensation?
Gentle paced breathing may reduce over-breathing and tension, but it should not replace assessment of new, severe or changing symptoms.
Why should I avoid a paper bag?
It can reduce the oxygen available if the breathlessness has a physical cause, making an emergency harder to recognise.
