Remedies for hiccups in adults

Short answer
Most short-lived adult hiccups settle with calm breathing, small sips, and avoiding the trigger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try first
- Sit upright and take small sips of water
- Avoid
- Paper-bag breathing and forceful manoeuvres
Why hiccups happen
A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the breathing muscle followed by quick closure of the voice opening. Eating quickly, a full stomach, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, stress, or laughing can trigger episodes. Reflux or irritation of the stomach lining may contribute when hiccups recur with burning, nausea, or upper-abdominal discomfort.
Safe measures to try
Pause eating and breathe slowly. Take small sips of cool water, swallow carefully, and sit upright. Once the episode passes, eat more slowly and avoid large meals, fizzy drinks, and alcohol if they trigger you. Do not frighten yourself, breathe into a paper bag, or use forceful swallowing methods. Persistent episodes may need treatment of an underlying problem such as acid reflux; do not start acid reflux medication without medical advice.
When to arrange assessment
Contact a clinician if hiccups continue for a prolonged period, repeatedly interrupt sleep or eating, or come with vomiting, severe pain, trouble swallowing, weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, new neurological symptoms, or inability to keep fluids down.
Questions for your doctor
Tell your doctor when the hiccups began, possible food or medicine triggers, and whether reflux symptoms occur alongside them. Ask whether you need assessment for acid reflux or gastritis and which treatment is appropriate.
