How heat exhaustion develops
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses fluid and salt through sweating and cannot cool itself effectively. Signs can include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, thirst, cramps, cool clammy skin, or dark urine. Dehydration can accompany it. Heat intolerance, illness, exertion, and hot indoor or outdoor conditions may increase risk.
First steps
Stop activity and move into shade, air conditioning, or another cool area. Lie down if dizzy, loosen extra clothing, and cool the skin with wet cloths, a fan, or a cool shower. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink if fully alert and able to swallow. Avoid alcohol. Do not return to strenuous activity until recovered, and arrange medical advice if symptoms do not improve promptly or keep returning.
When it is urgent
Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, seizures, loss of consciousness, very hot skin, trouble breathing, or inability to drink. These can indicate heatstroke, which needs immediate treatment. Seek medical care for persistent vomiting, worsening weakness, very little urine, or symptoms in an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a serious chronic condition.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how much fluid is appropriate for you, whether medicines or illness increase your heat risk, and how to plan activity in hot weather. Describe the setting, duration, fluid intake, and any faintness or vomiting.
