Remedies for ear pain after swimming

Short answer
After swimming, keep the ear dry, avoid inserting objects, and seek assessment if pain, discharge, or hearing changes persist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Keep dry
- Pause swimming and protect the ear from shower water
- Avoid
- Cotton buds, fingers, oils, and unprescribed ear drops
- Review needed
- Discharge, fever, hearing change, dizziness, or worsening pain
What may be causing the pain
Water left in the outer ear can soften and irritate the skin, allowing inflammation commonly called swimmer's ear. Pressure, a scratch from a fingernail or cotton bud, or trapped Earwax Buildup can also make the ear sore. Pain after swimming does not by itself identify an infection; the outer and middle ear need different assessments.
Safe measures
Tilt the painful ear downward and gently pull the earlobe in different directions to encourage drainage. Dry the outside with a towel; a hairdryer on its lowest, cool setting held well away may help. Keep swimming and shower water out until discomfort settles. Do not put cotton buds, fingers, oils, or unprescribed drops into the canal, especially if you might have a perforated eardrum.
A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether pain relief or ear drops are appropriate. Antibiotic Treatment is used only when an infection has been diagnosed or specifically advised. Do not share drops.
When to seek medical care
Arrange medical review for worsening pain, tenderness when the outer ear is touched, discharge, fever, reduced hearing, dizziness, or symptoms that do not settle after keeping the ear dry. Seek urgent help for severe pain with swelling around the ear, sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, or marked dizziness. Children and people with diabetes or weakened immunity should seek advice sooner.
Useful questions
Ask whether the outer ear canal is inflamed, whether the eardrum can be seen safely, and which drops or pain medicine fit your situation. Ask if Ear Wax Removal is needed rather than attempting to clear the canal yourself.

Questions people ask
Can trapped water cause ear pain?
Yes. Water can irritate the outer ear canal, especially when the skin has been scratched or softened, but persistent pain needs an examination.
Should I use ear drops after swimming?
Only use drops recommended for you. Some are unsafe with a perforated eardrum, and pain with discharge should be assessed before treatment.
