What should you know about redo microdiscectomy?

A microdiscectomy removes a small amount of disc material pressing on a nerve, often to address sciatica or radiating leg pain. A repeat procedure works through an area already operated on, so the surgeon reviews updated imaging, the source of compression, scar tissue, spinal stability, and your symptoms before recommending it. Persistent pain can also come from another cause, so pain alone does not automatically mean another operation is needed.

Bring records of the first operation, your imaging, medication list, and a clear description of leg pain, numbness, weakness, and walking limits. Follow the surgical team's instructions about medicines, fasting, wound care, lifting, and driving. Physiotherapy may help rebuild movement and trunk strength before or after surgery when appropriate. Depending on the findings, options such as an epidural steroid injection or endoscopic spine surgery may be discussed.

After surgery, seek urgent help for new or worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, fever with a worsening wound, or severe pain that is not settling.
