Red vomiting in pregnancy: what should you know?

Mild vomiting can occur with pregnancy-related nausea, but frequent episodes can make it difficult to keep fluids, food, or prescribed medicines down. Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, or Rotavirus Infection may bring diarrhoea, cramps, or fever. Migraine can cause vomiting with headache and light sensitivity. Gallstones or Pancreatitis may cause strong upper abdominal pain. Meningitis is uncommon but serious, particularly when vomiting occurs with severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or sensitivity to light. The colour, timing, frequency, and associated symptoms help a clinician judge the cause.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink and rest. When fluids stay down, try plain foods in small portions. Avoid foods or smells that trigger nausea, and do not start anti-sickness medicine, supplements, or herbal products without checking pregnancy safety with a clinician or pharmacist. Keep taking essential prescribed treatment unless your maternity team advises otherwise. Record how often you vomit and whether you are passing urine normally.

Contact your maternity team or doctor promptly if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, feel faint, have a dry mouth, or are losing weight. Seek urgent care for blood or green material in vomit, severe abdominal pain, fever, confusion, a stiff neck, or a severe headache. Vaginal bleeding, severe weakness, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy also needs immediate advice.
