Red swollen lips causes: what to know

Lip products, toothpaste, foods, dental materials, and medicines can irritate or trigger a contact reaction. Sudden swelling beneath otherwise normal-looking skin can be angioedema, especially when it affects other areas. Cracking, crusting, sores, or tenderness may suggest inflammation or infection. A bite, burn, trauma, or cosmetic procedure can also produce local swelling. The colour, speed of onset, itch, pain, and any hives provide useful clues, but do not establish a diagnosis.

Stop suspected new lip products and rinse the mouth if a food or product may have triggered the change. Avoid licking, biting, picking, or applying fragranced balms. Use a cool compress wrapped in clean fabric. Keep a list of medicines and exposures, including anything taken shortly before the swelling. Do not take someone else’s medication; a pharmacist or clinician can advise what is suitable for your situation.

Get emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, hoarseness, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, tongue swelling, dizziness, or rapidly increasing lip swelling. Seek prompt assessment for fever, pus, severe pain, spreading redness, or swelling after an injury. Arrange review when episodes recur, last longer than expected, or began after a new medicine, even if breathing is normal.
