Red swollen joints in fingers: what should you know?

Red swollen finger joints can result from inflammation, crystals, injury, or infection and should be assessed when severe or persistent. Record which joints are affected, whether both hands are involved, how quickly symptoms appeared, and whether morning stiffness or skin changes accompany them.

A gout flare can present with sudden intense pain, redness, and warmth in a joint. Pseudogout is another crystal-related cause. Osteoarthritis may produce pain and enlargement around finger joints, while rheumatoid arthritis can cause inflammatory swelling and stiffness in a pattern across the hands. Psoriatic arthritis may involve swollen fingers or changes around nails and skin. Infection is less common but needs prompt attention.

Remove rings before swelling progresses. Rest the hand, keep it elevated, and use a protected cool pack if it eases discomfort. Avoid squeezing, forceful gripping, or trying to crack the joints. A clinician may examine the joint pattern and consider blood tests, imaging, or fluid testing. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication or, in selected cases, a cortisone injection.

Seek urgent assessment for a hot joint with fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, or a wound. Get prompt help if fingers become numb, blue, unusually pale, or difficult to move. Book a clinical review for repeated flares, persistent swelling, prolonged morning stiffness, or symptoms that interfere with writing, dressing, or gripping.
