Red Spots on the Penile Head: What to Know

The penile head is sensitive, so friction, sweat, soaps, lubricants, condoms, or vigorous washing can cause redness. Inflammation may bring itch, soreness, swelling, scaling, or a burning feeling. Yeast and other infections can also cause redness, while sexually transmitted infections may produce sores, blisters, discharge, or pain when urinating. Spots that are smooth and stable are different from ulcers or blisters, but appearance alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Rinse with lukewarm water, dry gently, and avoid fragranced products, antiseptics, and unprescribed creams. Pause sexual contact until the cause is clearer, especially if there are sores, discharge, or recent exposure. Do not squeeze, scrape, or pick at the spots. A sexual-health or dermatology clinician can examine the skin and arrange tests when appropriate; share relevant exposure and medication details honestly.

Arrange prompt medical review for symptoms lasting beyond a short period, repeated episodes, pain, itch, swelling, discharge, sores, blisters, or painful urination. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, inability to pass urine, rapidly worsening pain, fever, or a darkening or damaged area. A partner may also need advice if an infection is suspected.
