Short answer

Red spots on the bottom of the feet may result from friction, pressure, irritation, infection, or inflammation, and walking symptoms help determine urgency.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

Spots beneath areas that bear weight can follow pressure, rubbing, a blister, or a reaction to footwear. Small bumps around hairs are less typical on the sole because the thick sole skin has no ordinary hair follicles. Peeling, scaling, cracking, burning, or moisture between the toes can point toward a different process than isolated red marks.

Look at whether the spots are on one foot or both, whether they fade when the foot is raised, and whether there is pain, warmth, swelling, drainage, or a break in the skin. Recent walking, sport, new shoes, communal wet areas, or a new foot product may be relevant.

Protect the soles

Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, and wear shoes that do not press on the affected area. Avoid popping blisters or peeling skin. Use a clean dressing over an open rubbed area and reduce the activity that caused pressure until it settles. Do not share towels or footwear if there is scaling or a suspected infection, and ask a pharmacist or clinician before using medicated creams.

When to seek care

Arrange an examination if the marks persist, recur, become scaly, or make walking uncomfortable. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, red streaking, or a wound that is not closing. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or immune suppression should have a new foot lesion assessed sooner because small injuries can become harder to notice or heal.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the spots are caused by pressure, dermatitis, infection, or another condition; whether footwear or activity should change; how to dress any broken skin; and which warning signs require same-day attention.

Questions people ask

Can shoes cause red spots on the soles?

Yes. Repeated pressure, rubbing, heat, and contact with shoe materials can irritate sole skin or create a blister.

When are sole spots more urgent?

Rapid spread, warmth, swelling, drainage, severe pain, fever, or a wound in a high-risk foot needs prompt medical care.
