Red small moles: what to know

A smooth, bright-red pinpoint or round bump can be a benign blood-vessel growth, while a brown, pink, or mixed-colour mole comes from pigment-producing cells. Colour alone cannot identify a lesion. Notice whether it is flat or raised, evenly shaped, clearly bordered, and stable. A spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or sensation, bleeds without being injured, crusts, or fails to heal needs professional assessment. A photograph with a ruler beside the lesion can help you track change, but it cannot replace examination.

Do not pick, squeeze, tie off, or burn the spot at home. Protect it from repeated rubbing and use sun protection on exposed skin. Arrange a skin check for a new lesion, especially if you cannot compare it with older photographs or if several spots appeared together. A clinician may examine it with magnification and decide whether monitoring, a biopsy, or removal is suitable. Surgical excision removes a lesion with a margin for laboratory assessment; other mole-removal approaches may be discussed according to its appearance and location.

Request prompt medical review for bleeding, ulceration, rapid change, marked pain, persistent crusting, or a lesion that looks unlike your other spots. Seek urgent help if bleeding will not stop after firm direct pressure. Do not delay assessment because a lesion is small; the pattern over time and examination findings matter more than size alone.
