Red Skin Tag on the Scalp: What to Know

A true skin tag is usually a soft growth that can catch on a comb, hat, helmet, or fingernail. Irritation may make it red, sore, or prone to spotting. A scalp bump can also be a mole, wart, cyst, inflamed follicle, or another lesion, and appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Hair can hide changes, making regular visual checks or help from another person useful.

Do not tie it off, cut it, burn it, or use home-removal chemicals. Comb around it gently, avoid picking, and keep hats and hair tools from rubbing the area. Photograph it in good light and note bleeding, tenderness, growth, or colour change. A dermatologist can identify the lesion and discuss removal if it repeatedly catches or becomes troublesome.

Book an assessment if the growth is new, rapidly enlarging, persistently painful, repeatedly bleeding, crusted, ulcerated, or changing in colour or shape. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, or marked swelling around it. Urgent help is appropriate for heavy bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.
