What should you know about red skin colored bumps on penile shaft?

Friction, shaving, condoms, lubricants, soaps, or sweat can irritate penile skin. A follicle can become inflamed, producing a tender bump. Contact dermatitis may itch or burn after exposure. Some normal anatomical features are smooth, stable, and similar on both sides, but a new lesion cannot be identified reliably from a description alone. Sexually transmitted infections can cause bumps, blisters, ulcers, discharge, or burning, and some cause few symptoms. Cellulitis is more concerning when redness is hot, painful, swollen, and spreading.

Colour, surface, number, duration, pain, itch, discharge, recent sexual contact, and shaving history help a clinician decide whether testing or treatment is needed. Avoid diagnosing the lesion by appearance alone.

Wash gently with water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser and keep the area dry. Stop new soaps, lubricants, and grooming products. Do not squeeze, cut, burn, or use wart removers or leftover creams on the penis. Avoid sexual contact, or use barrier protection, until a clinician has assessed a new unexplained lesion; testing may be appropriate for you and recent partners. Arrange a sexual-health or dermatology appointment, especially after a new partner or unprotected contact.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, an ulcer that bleeds, fever, pus, inability to pass urine, or a painful erection that does not settle. Book prompt assessment for blisters, sores, discharge, burning urination, a firm or enlarging bump, or any lesion that persists or changes.

Ask whether the bumps need examination under magnification, a swab, urine test, or blood test; whether sexual partners need advice; and what activity or products should be avoided during evaluation. Tell the clinician when the bumps appeared and whether they followed sex, shaving, or a new product.
