What should you know about red skin around eyes?

The thin eyelid skin can react to cosmetics, cleansers, fragrances, hair products, eye drops, contact lenses, or rubbing. Contact dermatitis may cause itching, scaling, or burning. Rosacea can affect nearby facial skin and may come with flushing or eye irritation. Sunburn and heat can also redden exposed skin. Less commonly, cellulitis causes tender, warm, spreading redness with swelling; this requires medical attention. Redness alone does not identify one condition.

Avoid assuming that a product is harmless because it is made for the face. The timing of a new product, one-sided versus two-sided involvement, itch, pain, and any eye symptoms help a clinician narrow the cause.

Stop new or fragranced products near the eyes and rinse gently with lukewarm water. Do not scratch, scrub, or apply steroid or antibiotic creams near the eye unless a clinician directs you. Use a cool clean compress over closed lids, keep makeup and contact lenses aside while irritated, and protect the area from sun and heat. If symptoms persist, arrange a dermatology or eye assessment. Seek urgent care for vision changes, severe eye pain, pain with eye movement, marked swelling that closes the eye, fever, pus, or redness spreading onto the cheek. Arrange a prompt appointment when the rash keeps returning, affects one eye repeatedly, or does not settle after removing a suspected irritant.

Ask whether the pattern fits contact dermatitis, rosacea, or another eye-area condition; whether any medication or product should be stopped; and which cleanser or treatment is safe for eyelid skin. Bring a list of products used near the eyes and photos showing how the redness changed.
