What should you know about red scaly spots on skin?

Small spots centred on hairs may occur with folliculitis or razor bumps. Acne can produce red, tender, or scaly spots when inflammation and dryness occur together. Rosacea often affects the central face and may come with flushing, warmth, or visible small vessels. Perioral dermatitis can cluster around the mouth or nose. Hormonal acne may follow a recurring pattern around the jawline or lower face, but a pattern alone does not confirm its cause.

Note whether spots itch or hurt, contain fluid or pus, form a ring, follow shaving, or worsen after a new product. Do not squeeze or scrape them, since trauma can prolong redness and leave marks.

Cleanse gently, use non-comedogenic moisturiser, and pause new fragranced products. Avoid picking, abrasive scrubs, and repeated shaving over irritated skin. Keep pillowcases, phones, and shaving tools clean without sharing personal items. A clinician may recommend treatment for acne, folliculitis, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis; LED light therapy may be considered for selected acne concerns after diagnosis.

Arrange an assessment if spots are painful, persistent, spreading, leaving scars, or repeatedly returning. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or red streaks. Urgent review is needed for swelling near the eye, severe facial pain, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the spots are acne, folliculitis, razor bumps, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis; which products may be aggravating them; and whether testing or a treatment trial is appropriate.
