What should you know about red measles symptoms?

Early features may include fever, cough, a runny nose, sore or watery eyes, and tiredness. The rash can begin around the face or hairline and move toward the trunk and limbs. Tiny spots in the mouth may be present. Swollen glands are possible, although none of these findings alone confirms measles. Other infections can look similar, so the timing and vaccination history are useful details for a clinician.

If measles is possible, telephone a GP service before travelling to a clinic. Keep the person home and avoid close contact, especially with infants, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity, until advised otherwise. Encourage fluids and rest. Write down when fever, cough, eye symptoms, and rash began, and keep the MMR record ready.

Get urgent help if there is difficulty breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, severe dehydration, a seizure, or a child who is becoming rapidly worse. Seek prompt clinical advice for suspected measles, particularly after a known exposure or when the affected person is very young, pregnant, or immunocompromised. Call ahead so infection-control measures can be arranged.
