Red lump under arm: what should you know?

The redness can come from an inflamed hair follicle, an irritated blocked gland, a small abscess, or a reaction to shaving or deodorant. A tender lump may be an enlarged lymph node responding to infection in the arm, chest, or nearby skin. Breast cancer can present with a lump in the armpit, and lymphoma can present with enlarged lymph nodes, but a red lump does not establish either diagnosis.

Notice whether it is soft or firm, movable or fixed, painful or painless, and whether the skin feels hot. Check for fever, drainage, a breast change, night sweating, or unexplained weight loss. These details help a clinician decide whether examination, imaging, or another test is appropriate.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump. Keep the area clean and pause shaving or products that sting. A warm, clean compress may ease local discomfort, but it should not delay assessment if the swelling is enlarging or the skin is becoming more inflamed.

Arrange a medical visit if the lump remains, returns, grows, or feels different from the surrounding tissue. Bring a list of medicines and note when you first saw the change.

Seek same-day medical advice for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth, severe pain, pus, fever, or feeling faint or unwell. Seek urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing. A lump that is hard, fixed, repeatedly enlarges, or remains without a clear skin cause also deserves prompt review, even when it is not painful.
