Red, irritated skin on the genital area: what to know

The appearance and accompanying symptoms help narrow the possibilities. Burning after a new soap, lubricant, pad, detergent, or shaving product can fit contact dermatitis. Warmth, swelling, tenderness, or redness that expands needs prompt assessment because cellulitis can affect deeper skin. Moisture and rubbing may cause heat rash or irritation in skin folds. Scaly, sharply defined patches may occur with psoriasis. Genital redness is not enough to identify a cause, and it does not by itself indicate an infection or sexually transmitted condition.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and pause fragranced washes, sprays, wipes, deodorants, and new topical products. Wear loose, breathable underwear and change out of damp clothing. Avoid scratching, shaving the area, and sexual contact if friction worsens the irritation. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, antibiotic, or numbing creams internally or near sensitive tissue unless a clinician advises it; the wrong product can mask the pattern or irritate delicate skin.

Arrange medical care promptly for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth or swelling, severe pain, pus, fever, blisters, open sores, tissue colour change, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a severe allergic reaction. A clinician should assess symptoms that persist, recur, follow sexual exposure, or involve unusual discharge or bleeding.

Ask which causes fit the exact location and surface changes, whether testing is needed, which products to stop, and what treatment is safe for external versus internal skin. Mention recent antibiotics, new products, shaving, sweating, sexual contact, and any urinary or vaginal symptoms.
