Red Freckles and Moles: What to Know

Freckles are commonly flat areas of increased pigment that become more noticeable with ultraviolet exposure. Moles can be flat or raised and may be tan, brown, pink, or close to the surrounding skin tone. A vivid red, smooth spot may instead involve superficial blood vessels. A single colour does not establish a diagnosis. Pay attention to asymmetry, an irregular edge, several colours, a new lump, persistent itch, bleeding, or a mark that is clearly changing from its previous appearance.

Take a well-lit photograph and note the location, shape, and surface. Use sun protection on exposed skin and avoid picking, home peels, or unapproved removal devices. If the mark is new or uncertain, have it checked before considering cosmetic options. Once a clinician confirms the diagnosis and suitability, light-based treatments may be discussed for selected benign pigment or vascular concerns, with skin tone and aftercare considered.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new or evolving mark, especially if its border, colour, elevation, or texture changes. Prompt review is warranted for spontaneous bleeding, repeated crusting, persistent soreness, or a non-healing surface.
