What should you know about red flaky skin around eyes?

Eyelid skin is thin and can react to makeup, cleansers, eye drops, nail products transferred by touch, hair dye, or airborne irritants. Contact dermatitis commonly causes itch, redness, dryness, and scaling. Rubbing can worsen the barrier damage. Psoriasis, rosacea, or sun exposure may affect nearby skin, while infection is more concerning when one side becomes hot, painful, swollen, or rapidly worse. A flaky rash around the eyes does not identify one cause, and the eye itself must be considered separately.

Pause eye makeup, lash adhesives, fragranced products, and any newly introduced cleanser. Rinse gently with clean lukewarm water and use a bland fragrance-free moisturiser on the surrounding skin, keeping it out of the eye. Apply a cool compress without pressing on the eyeball, and avoid rubbing or picking flakes. Do not put steroid, antibiotic, or cosmetic creams on the eyelids unless a clinician has recommended the specific product and duration. Keep a list of eye drops, cosmetics, hair products, and recent procedures.

Seek urgent care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, pain with eye movement, inability to open the eye, marked swelling, fever, pus, or rapidly spreading redness. Get prompt advice if the eyelid is hot and tender or the rash follows an eye procedure. Arrange a review when symptoms recur, persist after stopping suspected products, or affect both eyelids without a clear trigger.
