What should you know about red eye sensitive to light treatment?

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, can occur when an irritated or inflamed eye reacts strongly to light. Conjunctivitis may cause watering and discomfort, while Allergic Conjunctivitis more often causes itching, but marked light sensitivity can signal involvement of the cornea or deeper tissues. A clinician needs the whole pattern: pain, discharge, vision, headache, contact-lens use, and recent injury.

Treatment cannot be chosen safely from redness alone. Antibiotic medicine helps only some bacterial infections, and other causes may need lubricating drops, allergy treatment, or specialist care.

Rest in a dim room, use sunglasses outdoors, and avoid rubbing the eye. Remove contact lenses and do not restart them while the eye remains red or light-sensitive. A cool compress may reduce surface discomfort. Avoid borrowing drops or using steroid drops without a prescription. Arrange medical advice promptly if the symptom is new, persistent, or painful, even when discharge is absent.

Get same-day eye assessment for significant pain, blurred vision, a painful contact-lens eye, a scratch or foreign body, chemical exposure, or rapidly worsening redness. Emergency help is appropriate for severe headache, nausea, halos around lights, swelling, or inability to open the eye comfortably.

Ask whether the cornea is affected, whether infection is present, which drops are safe, how long to avoid lenses, and which changes mean you should return urgently.
