What should you know about red crusty spot on skin?

Crust forms when fluid, blood, or surface skin dries. A single spot may follow an insect bite, friction, a scratched rash, or contact with an irritating product. Multiple scaly areas can occur with inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis or dermatitis. A spreading, hot, painful area with drainage may suggest cellulitis. A spot that repeatedly crusts, bleeds, enlarges, or fails to heal needs an in-person examination; appearance alone cannot identify its cause.

Wash gently with water and a mild cleanser, pat dry, and avoid picking or scraping the crust. Keep the area protected from friction and pause new creams, fragrances, and harsh exfoliants. Do not share towels or apply leftover prescription medicine. Take a clear photograph in good light and note whether the border, tenderness, discharge, or size changes. A clinician may need to inspect the spot closely, especially if it is on the face, scalp, or another sun-exposed area.

Seek prompt medical care if redness spreads quickly, pain or warmth increases, pus appears, or fever develops. Get urgent help for swelling around the eye, severe facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. Book an appointment for a persistent or recurring crust, spontaneous bleeding, marked tenderness, or a sore that does not heal. Skin redness can accompany heat rash, sunburn, rosacea, or contact dermatitis, but these clues do not replace examination.
