Red Bumpy Rash Spreading Over the Body

A rash that follows a new medicine may be a drug eruption. Widespread itch with affected household contacts can raise concern for scabies. Contact dermatitis can extend beyond the original exposure, while atopic dermatitis and psoriasis may affect several body areas in recurring patterns. Ringworm can enlarge outward from an edge, and heat rash often appears where sweat is trapped. Intertrigo mainly involves skin folds. These possibilities require different treatment, so appearance alone is not enough.

Write down when the rash started, where it began, how quickly it spread, and any new medicine, food, product, illness, travel, or close contact. Photograph representative areas. Keep the skin cool, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and avoid scratching, exfoliating, or applying several new creams. Do not share towels or clothing if infection or scabies is possible. If a medicine seems related, seek advice promptly before changing a prescribed treatment.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, rapidly peeling or blistering skin, purple spots, severe pain, or fever with a very unwell feeling. Seek same-day medical advice for rapid spread, eye or mouth involvement, high fever, marked tenderness, or a rash that began soon after a medicine. Even without these signs, a spreading rash should be reviewed if it is not settling.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a medicine reaction, infection, infestation, or dermatitis; whether close contacts need advice; and which products are safe until the diagnosis is clearer. Provide a complete timeline and medicine list.
