What should you know about red bumps on skin keratosis?

Keratosis-like bumps often feel rough or sandpapery and may sit around hair follicles, commonly on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. They can look red, skin-coloured, or darker and may become more noticeable when the skin is dry. Smooth swollen bumps, sharply scaly plaques, blisters, or a hot tender patch may point to a different process. Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Psoriasis, Rosacea, Sunburn, and Cellulitis can all produce redness in other patterns.

The word keratosis describes a surface change rather than one single diagnosis. A clinician may need to inspect the bumps closely, especially if one lesion differs from the rest.

Apply a plain moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing, and avoid harsh scrubs, picking, and very hot water. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may smooth some rough follicular bumps, but introduce one product at a time and stop if burning or marked irritation develops. Do not use strong exfoliants on broken skin. Sun protection can reduce contrast between red areas and surrounding skin.

Seek urgent care for rapid redness, severe pain, fever, pus, extensive blistering, or swelling affecting the face, eyes, or mouth. Book a skin assessment if a bump bleeds, crusts repeatedly, changes quickly, becomes distinctly different, or fails to improve with gentle care. A diagnosis matters before procedures or prescription creams are considered.

Ask whether the bumps are follicular, what ingredients suit your skin, how often to use them, and whether another condition should be excluded. Tell the clinician about eczema, allergies, previous treatments, and any recent change in distribution.
