Red bum rash: possible causes and care

Rash in the buttock crease may be driven by friction, sweat, and trapped moisture, sometimes called intertrigo. A new soap, wipe, detergent, pad, or fabric can cause contact dermatitis. Itchy, dry patches may fit atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, while a ring-shaped or spreading scaly edge can suggest ringworm.

Intense night-time itching or affected household members can point toward scabies. A rash that begins after a new medicine needs attention because drug rash can occasionally be more serious. These patterns guide assessment; the rash alone cannot identify one cause with certainty.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, avoid fragranced products, and pat rather than rub. Keep the crease dry, change out of sweaty clothing, choose breathable underwear, and reduce friction while the skin is irritated. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice when the diagnosis is unclear.

Take a clear photo if the appearance changes, and list new products, medicines, exercise, heat exposure, and sexual or household contacts for the appointment. Avoid scratching, which can break the skin and invite infection.

Arrange an assessment if the rash persists, repeatedly returns, spreads, cracks, or becomes painful or oozy. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, fever, or a rapidly spreading rash after a medicine. Prompt care is also needed for severe pain or pus.
