Red blotches on skin: common causes and next steps

Flat redness after heat or sun exposure may settle as the trigger stops. A scaly or sharply outlined patch can occur with inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis or contact dermatitis. A rash in sweaty skin folds may fit heat rash, while a hot, painful, expanding area can be cellulitis. Rosacea commonly presents with facial redness and flushing. Note whether the blotches blanch when pressed, whether they are itchy or tender, and whether new areas appear.

Photograph the skin before applying anything, then write down recent products, medicines, foods, travel, heat, sun, and contact with plants or materials. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and sun protection; keep overheated areas cool and avoid fragrance, exfoliation, and scratching. Stop a newly introduced product if irritation began after using it, but seek advice before stopping a prescribed medicine.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, fever with rapidly spreading warmth, or purple spots that do not fade under pressure. Book a review when redness persists, repeatedly returns, involves the eyes or mouth, or remains unexplained.

Ask whether the appearance fits irritation, inflammation, or infection; which treatments are appropriate for the affected site; and what changes should prompt urgent review. Show dated photographs if the blotches come and go.
