Red and itchy around the eyes: what to know

Allergic conjunctivitis can make the whites of the eyes red, watery and itchy. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing or a blocked, runny nose. House dust mite allergy and pet allergy are possible triggers, especially when symptoms follow a particular room or animal. Cosmetics, creams, smoke, chlorine, contact lenses or rubbing can irritate the eye area. Itching points toward allergy or irritation, while significant pain or visual change needs a different level of concern.

Avoid the suspected trigger and do not rub your eyes. Wash hands, rinse the face after outdoor exposure, and use a cool clean compress over closed eyes. Stop new eye products and pause contact lenses while symptoms continue. Allergy medication may help some people, but ask a pharmacist or clinician which option is suitable, particularly for children, pregnancy or other medicines.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, affect one eye persistently, or do not improve after removing an irritant. Seek urgent help for eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, pus-like discharge, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face with breathing difficulty. Rapidly worsening swelling around the eye also needs prompt review.
