What should you know about recurring hives?

How the structures involved in Hives differ from normal

Short answer

Recurring hives can appear in waves, so tracking timing and associated swelling helps guide assessment and treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Raised itchy welts that change or move
Useful record
Photos plus timing, exposures, and medicines
Emergency sign
Tongue or throat swelling with breathing difficulty

What recurring hives can mean

Hives are raised, itchy welts that may change shape, appear in different places, and fade while new ones arise. Heat, pressure, infection, medicines, foods, or emotional stress can act as triggers, although a clear trigger is not always found. Hives can occur without a serious allergy. Deeper swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, or feet is called angioedema and needs particular attention.

Managing repeated episodes

Photograph a flare and record foods, medicines, illness, heat, exercise, pressure, and timing. Use cool compresses and loose clothing, and avoid scratching or very hot showers. A clinician may recommend oral antihistamine treatment and explain the safest schedule. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or repeatedly take oral corticosteroid treatment without medical guidance, because the cause and risks need review. Bring the diary and photographs to an appointment.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt clinical advice for widespread skin swelling, repeated episodes with bruising or pain, or hives that persist and disrupt sleep. A skin rash that lasts in one spot rather than moving may need a different diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits urticaria, whether any medicine or infection could be contributing, how to use an antihistamine safely, and what action plan to follow if facial or throat swelling occurs.
