Rectal bleeding without pain

Bright-red blood may be noticed on paper, on stool, or in the bowl without tenderness. Diverticular Disease, polyps, and other bowel changes can bleed without causing pain. Rectal Cancer and Bowel Cancer are possible causes that require evaluation, but bleeding alone cannot diagnose them.

Inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis can sometimes cause bleeding with little pain, especially when bowel urgency, loose stools, or mucus are present.

Write down the colour, amount, timing, and whether blood is separate from or mixed with stool. Note changes in bowel habit, tiredness, appetite, weight, mucus, fever, and medicines including anticoagulants.

Arrange a medical review rather than relying on the absence of pain. The clinician may examine the area, request blood or stool tests, and decide whether a camera test or Polyp Removal is relevant.

Seek emergency care for heavy or continuous bleeding, black stool, dizziness, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or vomiting blood. Abdominal swelling, severe pain, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask what tests fit your age, history, and bleeding pattern; whether your medicines affect bleeding; and what timeframe is appropriate for follow-up if no further blood appears.
