Recovering from heat exhaustion: what to know

Short answer
Recovering from heat exhaustion requires cooling your body, replacing fluids gradually, resting, and checking that symptoms steadily improve.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Move somewhere cool
- Fluids
- Sip regularly if alert
- Return to activity
- Build up gradually
What the symptoms mean
Excessive sweating, thirst, headache and dizziness may occur when heat and fluid loss overwhelm the body's ability to cool itself. Dark urine can signal that more fluid is needed. Heat intolerance may linger, making another hot environment feel difficult soon after the episode. Dehydration can develop alongside heat exhaustion, especially after exertion or prolonged exposure to heat.
How to recover
Move to a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place and loosen unnecessary clothing. Rest lying or sitting down, use cool wet cloths or a fan, and take small, regular sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you are alert and able to swallow. Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise and another period in high heat until you feel fully recovered. Resume activity gradually and take breaks in a cool place.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for confusion, collapse, a seizure, loss of consciousness, inability to drink, worsening symptoms or a very hot body with altered behaviour. Seek medical advice if dizziness, headache, excessive thirst, dark urine or weakness does not improve after cooling and fluids. A clinician can assess dehydration and decide whether further treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask when you can return to work or exercise, how to manage medicines in hot weather, and whether ongoing symptoms could reflect dehydration or another heat-related illness.
