Reasons for Hypertension

Short answer
Hypertension can develop through inherited tendency, ageing, excess body weight, high salt intake, inactivity, alcohol, stress, kidney disease, sleep apnoea, or certain medicines.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Primary and secondary causes
Many people have primary hypertension, where several influences gradually raise pressure without one single cause. Narrowed or stiffened blood vessels, altered kidney salt handling, and hormonal regulation can contribute. Secondary hypertension has an identifiable driver, such as chronic kidney disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, or a medicine. High blood pressure may have no noticeable symptoms, so a reading needs confirmation using appropriate repeated measurements rather than symptoms alone.
Steps after a high reading
Repeat the measurement when seated and rested, using a correctly sized cuff, and record the results with the time and any symptoms. Review salt intake, activity, sleep, alcohol, smoking, and medicines with a clinician. Do not change prescribed tablets on your own. Assessment may include blood and urine tests, a medication review, and checks for kidney or cardiovascular effects.
When to seek care
Seek emergency help for a high reading accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, or sudden vision loss. Arrange medical review for repeatedly elevated readings, headaches with neurological symptoms, pregnancy-related concerns, or missed treatment doses.
Questions to ask
Could another condition or medicine be raising my pressure? How should I measure it at home? What target and follow-up plan apply to me? Which symptoms need emergency help?
