Reasons for extreme fatigue

Short answer
Extreme fatigue may reflect poor sleep, stress, infection, dehydration, medicine effects or an underlying health condition, so persistent or disruptive symptoms deserve medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What extreme fatigue can mean
Fatigue is more than feeling ready for bed: it can reduce concentration, motivation and physical stamina. A sudden change may occur with COVID-19 or dehydration, while ongoing low energy can accompany anaemia, coeliac disease or chronic kidney disease. Emotional overload and prolonged work pressure can contribute to burnout. Alcohol use can disturb sleep and leave you tired even after resting. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is another possible explanation when disabling fatigue persists alongside other symptoms. These possibilities overlap, and fatigue alone cannot identify its cause.
What to do next
Record when the tiredness began, how it affects daily activities, your sleep pattern, recent illness, fluid intake, alcohol use and any new medicines. Regular meals, adequate fluids, a consistent sleep routine and gentle activity may help while you arrange an appointment. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. A clinician may ask about mood, bleeding, digestion, snoring and weight change, then decide whether an examination or blood tests are useful.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if fatigue is persistent, worsening, unexplained or interfering with work, driving, exercise or self-care. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, inability to keep fluids down or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not drive if exhaustion makes you struggle to stay alert.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes fit your pattern of symptoms, whether your medicines or sleep could be contributing, which examinations or tests may help, and what changes should prompt urgent review. Bring a list of medicines and a brief fatigue diary.

Questions people ask
Can extreme fatigue be caused by dehydration?
Yes. Dehydration can reduce circulating fluid and contribute to weakness, dizziness, headache and tiredness, especially after illness, heat or poor fluid intake.
When should persistent fatigue be checked?
Arrange an appointment when fatigue continues, worsens, has no clear explanation or limits ordinary activities; seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, chest pain, fainting or confusion.
