Short answer

A period that does not stop may be caused by hormonal changes, fibroids or polyps, medicines, a bleeding disorder, pregnancy-related problems, or conditions affecting the ovaries or uterus.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible causes
Hormone changes, uterine growths, medicines, pregnancy-related problems, infection, or bleeding disorders.
Prepare for review
Bring bleeding dates, protection changes, clots, pain, medicines, contraception, and pregnancy possibility.
Urgent symptoms
Rapid heavy bleeding, faintness, breathlessness, severe pain, or fever needs prompt help.

What prolonged bleeding can mean

Bleeding may continue when ovulation is irregular, because the uterine lining is exposed to changing hormone signals. This can happen during perimenopause, with polycystic ovary syndrome, or with other hormone-related changes. Fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, infection, and some medicines can also alter bleeding.

Pregnancy-related bleeding, thyroid problems, clotting conditions, and changes in ovarian function need consideration. Menopause means periods have stopped for a full year; bleeding after that point should be assessed rather than assumed to be a new period. The symptom does not identify one cause by itself.

What to do now

Contact a clinician if bleeding is prolonged, repeatedly heavy, or affecting work, sleep, or usual activities. Record when it began, how often pads or tampons need changing, clots, pain, dizziness, medicines, contraception, and the possibility of pregnancy.

Assessment may include a pregnancy test, blood count, examination, and imaging chosen according to your history. Treatment depends on the cause and may include medicine, treatment of a uterine problem, or support for an underlying hormone condition. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help if bleeding rapidly soaks through protection, you feel faint or breathless, have severe pelvic pain, fever, confusion, or might be pregnant. Emergency assessment is also needed for weakness or dizziness that makes standing difficult, because ongoing blood loss can cause anaemia or instability.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the pattern, whether pregnancy or anaemia needs checking, which examination or scan is appropriate, and how to manage bleeding safely while the cause is investigated. Mention bleeding after menopause or any family history of bleeding problems.

Questions people ask

Can perimenopause make periods last longer?

Yes. Changing ovulation and hormone signals during perimenopause can make bleeding irregular or prolonged, but heavy bleeding still warrants assessment.

Should bleeding after menopause be checked?

Yes. Any vaginal bleeding after menopause should be assessed to identify its cause.
