What should you know about really bad cracked feet?

Short answer
Really bad cracked feet need gentle skin care, protection from further splitting, and medical review when cracks are deep, painful or infected-looking.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why feet crack
Dry, thickened skin can lose flexibility and split under pressure, commonly at the heel edge and the ball of the foot. Open fissures may sting while walking and can bleed when they extend into deeper skin. Repeated friction, prolonged standing, open-backed shoes and dry air can worsen the cycle.
Foot cracking can occur with simple dryness, eczema or psoriasis. Scaling between the toes, itching and a spreading rash can also fit Athlete's Foot, which needs different treatment from moisturising alone.
What you can do
Wash with lukewarm water, use a mild cleanser and pat dry, especially between the toes. Apply a rich moisturiser to the heels and other dry areas soon after washing; Emollient Therapy can help restore the skin barrier. Cover a painful heel crack with a clean dressing and choose supportive, closed footwear that reduces rubbing.
Do not cut deeply into thick skin, pull at flakes or apply harsh acids to an open fissure. A clinician can check for fungal infection, eczema, pressure points or another cause and recommend a suitable product when home care is not enough.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, worsening pain, fever, a darkening wound or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, reduced sensation or immune problems should seek advice early for any open foot crack because healing may be complicated.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the fissures are caused by dryness, fungus, eczema or pressure; which moisturiser and dressing suit the area; and how to protect the skin while walking or bathing.

Questions people ask
Should I file deep heel cracks?
Avoid aggressive filing over open or bleeding skin; gentle care and professional advice are safer when fissures are deep.
When could cracked feet be fungal?
Itching, scaling between the toes or a spreading scaly rash can occur with Athlete's Foot and should be assessed.
