Razor burn and folliculitis

Friction, close cutting, sweat, occlusion, and contaminated equipment can irritate follicles. Ingrown hairs may also inflame a follicle. Small red bumps, itch, tenderness, or pustules can occur on shaved skin. Folliculitis can affect the scalp, beard area, trunk, or limbs, so the body site and pattern help guide assessment. A symptom such as a skin bump does not by itself identify folliculitis.

Pause shaving and avoid picking. Clean gently, pat dry, and wear loose clothing over affected areas. Do not share razors or reuse a blunt blade. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or another treatment when bacterial infection is suspected; antibiotics are not suitable for every bump. Repeated episodes may need a review of shaving technique, products, and underlying skin conditions.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, marked swelling, or a softening deep lump. Arrange an appointment for pus, recurrent flares, scalp involvement, or bumps that do not improve after the shaving trigger is removed.
