Razor bumps after laser hair removal

Laser treatment targets pigment in the hair follicle, but it does not prevent every short-term skin reaction or remove every hair immediately. A person may still shave between sessions, and a curved regrowing hair can cause an [Ingrown Hair](/symptoms/ingrown-hairs/). Small bumps around follicles can also be post-treatment irritation. Persistent recurrent bumps may fit [Razor Bumps](/conditions/pseudofolliculitis-barbae/), while deep painful lumps need a different assessment.

Follow the treating clinic's aftercare instructions, keep the area cool and avoid rubbing, picking, hot baths and fragranced products while skin is reactive. Do not wax or pluck unless your provider specifically advises it; shaving may be permitted with a clean razor once the skin is comfortable. Record when bumps begin and whether they occur after shaving or every session. Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, blistering, crusting or pain is worsening rather than settling, or if pus appears. Seek prompt medical care for spreading redness, fever, severe pain or a rapidly enlarging lump. Repeated deep nodules in the groin or armpits warrant assessment for conditions such as [Hidradenitis Suppurativa](/conditions/hidradenitis-suppurativa/).

Ask whether the bumps are expected follicle irritation, ingrown hairs or a burn; when shaving can safely resume; and whether the wavelength, settings and interval suit your skin and hair. Mention any history of [Hirsutism](/conditions/hirsutism/) or dark marks after inflammation.
