What should you know about razor bump scars?

When an ingrown hair or inflamed follicle heals, the skin may temporarily look darker or lighter. Repeated scratching, squeezing, or deep inflammation can alter texture and leave a raised or indented area. The beard, neck, bikini line, and legs are common sites for shaving-related irritation, but a mark can occur anywhere hair is removed. Do not pick at bumps or try to lift trapped hairs with unclean tools. Stop close hair removal during a flare, cleanse gently, moisturise, and protect exposed skin from the sun. When shaving resumes, soften the hair, use lubrication, follow its growth direction, and avoid stretching the skin or making repeated passes. Arrange a dermatology review if scars are multiplying, becoming raised, painful, itchy, or firm, or if new pus-filled bumps keep appearing. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked warmth, fever, red streaks, or swelling near the eye. An examination can separate a healed mark from active folliculitis, an ingrown hair, or another condition.
