What should you know about a raspy cough?

A rough or hoarse cough may follow a cold, post-nasal drainage, smoke exposure, or strain on the voice. Acute bronchitis can produce a persistent cough after an infection. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness, while reflux can irritate the throat without obvious heartburn. Allergic rhinitis may add sneezing and a blocked or runny nose. A sound cannot distinguish these causes by itself.

Record when the cough started, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, and whether it changes with exercise, lying down, meals, or particular environments. Also note fever, breathlessness, chest pain, and voice change.

Drink fluids, rest your voice, and avoid smoking, vaping, dust, and strong scents. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat. Follow prescribed inhalers exactly as directed; do not share them. Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, coughing blood, or sudden chest pain. Arrange an appointment for a cough that does not improve, keeps returning, or is linked with wheeze, reflux symptoms, or a hoarse voice that persists.
