What should you know about a rash linked with SJS?

SJS can start with feeling unwell, fever, sore throat, cough, or burning eyes, followed by a tender red or dusky rash. Blisters, skin peeling, and raw areas may develop. Mouth, eye, and genital sores are especially concerning because affected tissues can become painful and damaged. A medication reaction is one possible trigger, but the diagnosis requires urgent clinical assessment and is not made from a photograph alone.

Go to an emergency department or contact emergency services if this pattern is present. Take the medicine packets or a current medication list, and note when each medicine was started. Do not apply new creams, break blisters, or delay care while trying home remedies. A clinician should decide what medicines need to be stopped or changed.

Seek immediate help for a painful spreading rash, blisters, peeling skin, fever with a new eruption, difficulty swallowing, reduced urination, eye pain, vision change, breathing difficulty, or sores inside the mouth or genital area. These symptoms warrant emergency assessment even if the rash began recently.
